Fort Roger Jones

Fort Roger Jones (1839-1839) - A temporary U.S. Army fort established in 1839 during the Second Seminole War by Captain Enos J. Mitchell (Cullum 523) and Company F, 1st U.S. Infantry, near present day Aucilla, Jefferson County, Florida. Both Captain Mitchell and a Lieutenant William W. Pew died at the post from bilious fever in mid June 1839. The post was abandoned later in 1839.

History

A temporary U.S. Army fort established on 17 Mar 1839 during the Second Seminole War by Captain Enos J. Mitchell (Cullum 523) and Company F, 1st U.S. Infantry. Captain Mitchell died at this post on 10 Jun 1839 and his second in command 2nd Lt. William W. Pew died the next day, both of bilious fever.

The post was abandoned sometime thereafter, no post return was generated after May 1839.
