Began 1 Sep 1939, with the German invasion of Poland but the U.S. did not declare war on Germany and Japan until after 7 Dec 1941 when Pearl Harbor was attacked.
The war ended with Germany on VE Day, 8 May 1945, and with Japan on VJ Day, 15 Aug 1945
