Fort Cascades (1855-1861) - One company size post using blockhouses. Established 30 Sep 1855, abandoned 6 Nov 1861.
Fort Cascades was one of four forts established to protect the required portage around the Cascade Rapids of the Columbia River. Fort Cascades was built at the lower end of the rapids at the point where boats coming down the Columbia reentered the water after a difficult portage. Fort Rains was built to protect the middle section of the portage and Fort Lugenbeel was located at the beginning of the portage.
