The controlled area was identified as the Southwest Air Defense Sector (SWADS). On 1 Oct 1990, the four remaining JSS Control Centers were transferred to the Air National Guard in the states where they resided. The Guard units assigned provided maintenance and operations for the facilities, operational control remained with First Air Force but a new command element was introduced because the state Air National Guard units were under the command of the respective governors. The March JSS Regional Operations Control Center remained operational manned by the California Air National Guard, still using the FYQ-93 computers, until deactivated on 31 December 1994. On 1 Jan 1995, the Northwest Air Defense Sector at McChord AFB assumed control of most of the western half of the U.S. and became the Western Air Defense Sector (WADS).
