Post at Albuquerque (1846-1867) - A U.S. Army post established in 1846 during the Mexican War by Captain John H.K. Burgwin (Cullum 614), 1st U.S. Dragoons, in Albuguerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico. Captain Burgwin was killed on 7 Feb 1847 at the storming of El Pueblo de Taos, New Mexico. Abandoned in 1867. HistoryEstablished by Captain John H.K. Burgwin and companies G and I of the 1st U.S. Dragoons on 17 Nov 1846. The post was without troops 1851-1852 but was regarrisoned on 31 Aug 1852 and became the department headquarters. In March 1862, during the U.S. Civil War, Union Cavalry under Captain Herbert Enos abandoned the Post at Albuquerque and withdrew to Fort Union (3). Confederate forces under General Henry Sibley occupied the town. After the confederate defeat at Glorieta Pass, fleeing Confederate troops temporarily occupied the post. When the confederate forces under Major Trevanion Teel evacuated they buried eight cannons barrels near the post. These cannons were recovered in 1889 and two of them were displayed in the plaza for many years. Two replicas of the cannons are now in place in the Plaza and the originals are in the nearby Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. The post was abandoned 23 Aug 1867. Current StatusNo remains, markers and two replica cannons in the Plaza. Original cannons and other artifacts are in the nearby Albuquerque Museum of Art and History. Albuquerque, Bernalillo County, New Mexico
