Named Fort Dale after Colonel Samuel Dale who directed its establishment. Abandoned as a fortification in 1818. Alabama Territorial Governor William Bibb directed Colonel Samuel Dale to establish a new fort on the Federal Road to strengthen the local defenses against hostile Indians. Abandoned as a fortification when hostilities ceased. The site of the fort became the town of Fort Dale and the first county seat of Butler County.
