Fort George (20) (1776-?) - A revolutionary war fort situated on Bald Head Island, North Carolina. Fort George (20) HistorySmall British Revolutionary War fort established in 1776 to protect the opening of the Cape Fear River. A minor skirmish occurred on September 6th, 1776 when 150 Continental troops under the leadership of Col. Thomas Polk made their way across the Cape Fear River. They were subsequently discovered by the British fleet anchored off of the island and were subjected to a sustained barrage. The Americans later withdrew. Current StatusDestroyed
