Joseph Gilbert Totten (1788-1864) - Born 23 Aug 1788 in New Haven, Connecticut. A career U.S. Army officer and engineer who had a long and distinguished military engineering career (1805-1864). He served during the War of 1812, the Mexican War and the U.S. Civil War. Died on active duty at age 75 on 22 Apr 1864 in Washington, DC.
Joseph Totten entered the United States Military Academy on 4 Nov 1802 and graduated in the Class of 1805, 1 Jul 1805, as the 10th graduate of the Academy. He served during the War of 1812 and later on various ordnance and artillery boards. He served as supervising engineer on the construction of Fort Adams (1825-1838). He served in engineering positions during the Mexican-American War and as Chief of the Corps of Engineers during the U.S. Civil War. He was Breveted a Major General 21 Apr 1864 and died the next day at age 75. He was buried on 26 Apr 1864 in the Congressional Cemetery (Site - R44/36), Washington DC.
