Fort Maginnis (1) (1880-1890) - A U.S. Army post established in 1880 by Captain Daingerfield Parker, 3rd U.S. Infantry, and named for Major Martin Maginnis, 11th Minnesota Infantry. Located near the present day ghost town of Giltedge in Fergus County, Montana. Abandoned in 1890.

Fort Maginnis (1) History

Established on 22 Aug 1880 by Captain Daingerfield Parker, 3rd U.S. Infantry, to suppress Indian and civilian rustlers after the end of the Indian wars. One of five modern forts built after the Custer Massacre of 1876, Fort Keogh(1877), Fort Custer(1877), Fort Missoula(1877), Fort Assinniboine(1879) and Fort Maginnis(1880). Abandoned on 20 Jul 1890.

Current Status

Ruins only with some markings.
