Washington Territorial Volunteers

Washington Territorial Volunteers (1855-1858) - The Washington Territorial volunteers were authorized by the Legislative Assembly 26 Jan 1855.

The War east of the Cascades began in October 1855. Acting Governor Charles H. Mason called for Volunteer companies to make up the 1st Washington Territory Volunteers and they were mustered into U.S. Army service on 14 Oct 1855. The Volunteer companies were mustered out in December 1855.

In January 1856, Governor Isaac Stevens returned with a Treaty and with the intent of mustering into service one thousand volunteers. These troops would make up the 2nd Washington Territory Volunteers. These troops were mustered out at the end of 1856.
