Camp Atkinson (5) (1898-1898) - A temporary Spanish American War recruiting and training Camp established in 1898 in Piedmont Park, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia. Named Camp Atkinson after William Yates Atkinson, then governor of the State of Georgia. Abandoned in 1898.
History of Camp Atkinson
Established in 1898 as a Spanish American War recruiting and training Camp. The troops used the vacant exposition buildings at Piedmont Park where the 1895 Cotton States and International Exposition had been held.
The 2nd Georgia Volunteer Infantry was brought back to Camp Atkinson for muster out in November of 1898 as the war came to an end.
Abandoned as a military camp later in 1898.
