History of Fort Brooklyn

Established by the British occupiers of New York City in May of 1780 on Brooklyn Heights near the Patriot Fort Stirling. Built as a large, 450 feet square fortification surrounded by a 20' deep ditch with ramparts 40' to 50' high and bastions at the corners. Enclosed inside the compound was a large barracks and two bombproof powder magazines. Still under construction in July 1781, the fort was garrisoned by some 200 Hessian troops and armed with 18 cannons.

Abandoned as a fortification in 1783 when the British evacuated New York City at the end of the war.
