History
The camp was established in 1927 as an Oregon National Guard summer training area named Camp Clatsop. The camp was federalized from 1940 to 1947 for World War II. It reverted to state control at the end of that period.
Current Status

Active Military Installation, Oregon National Guard training area, and heliport. The Camp has 2,000 acres for state and federal training. Facilities include a cantonment area with quarters and messing facilities; training areas that include surf, beach, swamp, and sand dune environments.
The State's mission at the camp is to provide community service support and serve as the regional base for Oregon's North Coast emergency response and recovery operations. In addition, to integrate into the State Joint Operations Plan (JEOP).
The Federal mission at the camp is to provide facilities and resources required for a level III Training Center and to support the 249 Regional Institute courses that include an Officer Candidate School and Infantry training courses.
The post is frequently used by civilian organizations as well, including the Boy Scouts, Civil Air Patrol (CAP), and police departments. Police Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) teams throughout the Pacific Northwest use the rifle and pistol ranges, barracks and mess hall facilities, and a mock "city" (called a MOUT site, for Military Operations in Urban Terrain).
