Cambridge Battery

Cambridge Battery (1862-1918) - Cambridge Battery was a Canadian gun battery originally built for rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns, in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Later armed with two 6-inch breech-loading (BL) guns. Named for the Duke of Cambridge, Commander of the army during much of Queen Victoria's reign. Deactivated in 1918. Also known as Fort Cambridge. History Part of the Harbor Defense of Halifax. The Cambridge Battery was originally built for the then new rifled muzzle-loading (RML) guns. Construction began in 1862 and was completed on 31 Dec 1868 at a cost of 8,120 pounds. It was armed with five 10" RML guns and three 7" RML guns. "The battery was planned as an irregular, 4 faced lunette, almost like a bastion, with a palisaded gorge. The principal right face enfiladed the main channel out to sea, the left one fronted across channel to Ives Point, the short right flank commanded the entrance of the Northwest Arm, and the short left one was intended for light flanking guns." The battery was altered in 1871-1872 to mount the five 10" RML Guns. "A working party of fifty artillerymen are engageded in mounting the new battery at Fort Cambridge, Point Pleassant. It consists of five 18-ton guns. They have been landed at the Government wharf at the North West Arm and after three days hard work the party have (sic) succeeded in getting one gun up the steep, and mounting it in its position. These guns are furnished with Colonel Moncrieffe's patent gun-carriages and oil-buffers by which the gun is forced again into position the recoil after firing. They throw a 600 pound shot." circa 1873 Sometime after 1878 two 6-inch breech-loading long guns were emplaced. The 10" RML guns were last fired at Cambridge Battery in 1904. World War I (1914-1918) At the beginning of World War II the battery was still armed with two 6-inch breech-loading guns. Dismantled in 1918, the two guns were sent to Sydney, Cape Breton Island.
