Fort Mackenzie (1899-1918) - First established in 1899 by troops of the 25th U.S. Infantry at Sheridan, Sheridan County, Wyoming. Named in G.O. 100, 31 May 1899, after BG Randall Slidell Mackenzie, U.S. Army, who died 19 Jan 1889. Abandoned in 1918.
Fort Mackenzie History

Established at the request of Wyoming Senator Francis E. Warren because of the large number of Indians (23,000) in the area around Sheridan, Wyoming. First garrisoned by troops of the 25th U.S. Infantry on 11 May 1899. Discontinued by the U.S. Army on 3 Nov 1918.
Current Status
Transferred to the Bureau of Health and opened as a fatigue hospital for World War I veterans in 1922. Now a part of the Veterans Administration hospital system as Sheridan VAMC.
