Key West Barracks (1831-1947) - First established 2 Jan 1831 by Company H, 4th U.S. Infantry as a United States Barracks on the west side of Key West, Florida. This post was repeatedly placed in caretaker status over the years and reactivated for World War I and World War II, finally declared surplus on 22 Jul 1947 and turned over to the Navy.
HistoryEstablished in 1831 and served primarily as a garrison for Fort Taylor (2). Sporadically garrisoned during the construction of Fort Taylor (2) (1831-1866) and the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). Garrisoned from 1893 until 1947 in support of the Coastal Artillery batteries but at several points was in caretaker status. Declared surplus and turned over to the Navy in 1947.
