Alexander M. Wetherill (1845-1898) - Born 23 May 1845 in Pennsylvania. Appointed a Second Lieutenant, 6th U.S. Infantry, from Pennsylvania on 9 May 1867. Died 1 Jul 1898 leading the charge up San Juan Hill, Santiago de Cuba.

He was stationed mostly in western posts after being commissioned. He was promoted to Captain 3 Jan 1890 and spent his entire military career in the 6th U.S. Infantry. Captain and Brevet Major Wetherill was one of the first soldiers killed at San Juan Hill.

He is interred in Arlington National Cemetery in section W-W, Site 283.

Fort Wetherill in Rhode Island was named after him.
