Key West Barracks (1831-1947) - First established 2 Jan 1831 by Company H, 4th U.S. Infantry as a United States Barracks on the west side of Key West, Florida. This post was repeatedly placed in caretaker status over the years and reactivated for World War I and World War II, finally declared surplus on 22 Jul 1947 and turned over to the Navy.

History

Established in 1831 and served primarily as a garrison for Fort Taylor (2). Sporadically garrisoned during the construction of Fort Taylor (2) (1831-1866) and the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865). Garrisoned from 1893 until 1947 in support of the Coastal Artillery batteries but at several points was in caretaker status. Declared surplus and turned over to the Navy in 1947.

Current Status

Original Key West Barracks buildings have been demolished and the land once occupied by them is now the Peary Court Annex of Naval Air Station Key West with modern military family housing units. The perimeter includes the Peary Court U.S. Burial Grounds.
