General Buchanan served in the [[Black Hawk War]] (1832), the [[Seminole War II|Second Seminole War]] (1835-1842), the [[Mexican War]] (1846-1848) and the [[U.S. Civil War]] (1861-1865). After the end of the [[U.S. Civil War]] he served in New Orleans and as the Commander of the Department of Louisiana overseeing the transition from military to civil government.


General Buchanan retired from active service on 31 Dec 1870 after 30 years of service. He died on 29 Nov 1878 in Washington DC at age 67. He is buried in [[Rock Creek Cemetery]], Washington DC.

Robert Christie Buchanan (1811-1878) - Born 1 Mar 1811 in Baltimore, Maryland. A career U.S. Army infantry officer who was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point. Died 29 Nov 1878 in Washington DC and buried in Rock Creek Cemetery, Washington DC.

He entered the United States Military Academy 1 Jul 1826 and graduated 1 Jul 1830 in the Class of 1830 ranking 31st out of 42.
