| The fort was

| Lieutenant Gustavus C. Doane, [[2nd U.S. Cavalry]], became well known for his exploration of Yellowstone National Park while stationed at Fort Ellis. Doane also explored the Snake River during his career and accompanied the Howgate Arctic expedition in Greenland in 1880.

| The fort was decommissioned in 1886.

| Very few remains are left at the actual site, now occupied by the Fort Ellis Experimental Station of Montana State University.
