HistoryA temporary U.S. Civil War recruiting and assembly post established in Des Moines, Polk County, Iowa. Served as a rendezvous camp for the 23rd Infantry and the 39th Infantry, with most of their members from Polk, Story, and Dallas counties, Camp Burnside was active for a short period during the fall of 1862. Current Status![]() Monument located in Redhead Park at East 18th and Dean Streets in Des Moines.
