Henry C. Merriam (1837-1912) - Born 13 Nov 1837 in Houlton, Maine. Career U.S. Army officer and Medal of Honor winner, Brigadier General. Died 12 Nov 1912 in Portland, Maine.  Served in the U.S. Civil War at Antietam and the siege of Port Hudson. He earned the Medal of Honor at Fort Blakeley, Baldwin County, Alabama, on 9 Apr 1865. After the war Major Merriman served at posts in the west during the Indian Wars. He supervised construction of several posts including Camp Chelan and Fort Spokane (2) in the Washington Territory. He was named commander of volunteers on the Pacific Coast during the Spanish-American War as a Major General. He retired in 1901 and was promoted by Act of Congress to Brigadier General in 1903. He died 12 Nov 1912 at his home in Portland, Maine, and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, section 1, lot 114-13.
