Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site (1983-Active) - A U.S. Army Maneuver Area established in 1983 northeast of Trinidad Colorado in Las Animas County, Colorado. Active U.S. Army Maneuver Area operating under Fort Carson. Camp Piñon Canyon Maneuver Site Entrance. History Established in 1983 as a 235,896 acre U.S. Army Maneuver Area for Fort Carson in southeastern Colorado and opened for training in the summer of 1985. Facilities now include a small cantonment area, a railhead, helipads, and an airstrip. Described as the second-largest Department of Defense training site in the nation, the maneuver area hosts two major military exercises a year. In these exercises some 5,000 troops, 300 heavy tracked vehicles and 400 wheeled vehicles take part in month-long, intensive war maneuver exercises. Current Status Active military post no unauthorized public access. There is a small public area at the entrance to the post with explanitory signage and several hardware items displayed (a tank, a personell carrier and an artillery piece.)
