Joseph Gilbert Totten (1788-1864) - Born 23 Aug 1788 in New Haven, Connecticut. A long and distinguished military engineering career (1805-1864). Died on active duty at age 75 on 22 Apr 1864 in Washington, DC.

He entered the United States Military Academy on 4 Nov 1802 and graduated in the Class of 1805, 1 Jul 1805. He served during the War of 1812 and later on various ordnance and artillery boards. He served as supervising engineer on the construction of Fort Adams (1) (1825-1838). He served in engineering positions during the Mexican-American War and as Chief of the Corps of Engineers during the U.S. Civil War. He was Breveted a Major General 21 Apr 1864 and died the next day at age 75. He is buried in the Congressional Cemetery, Washington DC.
