Texas Revolution (1835-1836) - The Texas Revolution or Texas War of Independence was fought from 2 Oct 1835 to 21 Apr 1836 between Mexico and the Texas (Tejas) portion of the Mexican state of Coahuila y Tejas. Also Known as the Texican Revolution. The Texas Revolution came about with settler dissatisfaction with the rule of the Mexican government and a series of small military conflicts. The Revolution really began with the battle of Gonzales in October 1835 where Texans repulsed a force of Mexican dragoons. Mexican President Antonio López de Santa Anna entered Texas with his army in February 1836 and captured the Alamo at San Antonio and killed nearly all the defenders. Santa Anna pursued the remains of Sam Houston's army toward Louisiana but he was surprised and defeated on 21 Apr 1836 at the battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna was captured and forced to sign the Treaties of Velasco which required all Mexican troops to retreat south of the Rio Grande. He secretly promised to acknowledge the Republic of Texas and to recognize the Rio Grande as the border. Sources: |
