Fort Saint Jean Baptiste (1719-1819) - First established by the French in 1719 on an island in the Red River and moved twice with the final version built on the mainland in 1737. The Spanish occupied the fort in 1762 as a result of France’s defeat in the French & Indian War. The Fort was ceded to the United States by Spain in 1804 as a result of the Louisiana Purchase.
