Cold War (1947–1991)

In 1948 the U.S. Air Force (USAF) established the Twin Lights Lashup Radar Site L-12 adjacent to the historic twin lights on the Highlands Military Reservation. The twin lights had been the site of early radar testing in 1939 and the location of a World War II radar installation. The radar site was moved to a second location still on the Highlands Military Reservation circa 1953.

A USAF Radar Station, Highlands Air Force Station, was in operation on the second site between 1953 and 1966. That site was then turned over to the U.S. Army on 1 Jul 1966 and became Highlands Army Air Defense Site. Finally closed in 1974.

Current Status

Part of the Hartshorne Woods County Park, Navesink, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Two World War II batteries are visible. No remains of the radar site and most of the military reservation has been returned to park land.
