Fort Teran

Fort Teran (1831-1832) - A Mexican Army fort established in 1831 near present day Rockland, Tyler County, Texas. Named Fort Teran after Mexican General Manuel de Mier y Teran. Abandoned in 1832. Also known as Fort Turan. History of Fort Teran Established in October 1831 by order of Mexican General Manuel de Mier y Teran to suppress illegal American immigration into Mexico. Built by Mexican Colonel Peter Ellis Bean commanding twenty Mexican dragoons and ten infantrymen on the south bank of the Neches River. The fort site was occupied only for about ten months and may not have been fully completed Abandoned soon after the Battle of Nacogdoches which took place on 2 Aug 1832. Current Status No remains of the old fort and the exact site of the post is in question. A 1936 marker was place near the site but was moved in 1963 to a location known as Money Hill about half a mile due west of the original site.
