Fort Haskell (1864-1865) - A Union U.S. Civil War Fort established in 1864 near Petersburg, Petersburg City, Virginia. Abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war.
History of Fort HaskellEstablished as a Union earthworks in the Union siege line around Petersburg in 1864. Fort Haskell came under direct attack on 25 Mar 1865 when nearby Fort Steadman was overrun by Confederates and the Union survivors fled into Fort Haskell. Confederates then turned their fire on Fort Haskell. Union artillery, mistakenly thinking that Fort Haskell had also fallen, also fired on Fort Haskell. Sensing weakness, Confederate forces launched an assault on the now crowded Fort Haskell but were driven back and decimated by the defenders and the three cannons at the fort. The attack on Fort Steadman and Fort Haskell failed and the Confederates were driven back to their lines. Fort Haskell was abandoned in 1865 at the end of the war. Current StatusPart of the Petersburg National Battlefield Park, markers and remains of earthworks.
