Fort Benjamin Harrison (1903-1995) - A U.S. Army post established in 1903 in present day Lawrence, Marion County, Indiana. Named in 1906 for President Benjamin Harrison, 23rd President of the United States. BRAC closure in 1995. HistoryBuilt as an open plan infantry post designed for a single regiment. World War I (1917-1918)Fort Benjamin Harrison was an officer training post during World War I. World War II (1941-1945)During World War II Fort Benjamin Harrrison served as a troop processing center and as a prisoner of war camp for German and Italian prisoners. Cold War (1947-1991)Became Benjamin Harrison Air Force Base from 1948 to 1950 and returned to Army control in 1950 and housed the U.S. Army Finance Center. Closed under the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) program in 1995. Some portion of the post still has military tenants including the Defense Finance and Accounting Service, Army Reserve and Indiana National Guard units, and a post exchange and commissary. Current StatusPart of Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park, Lawrence, Marion County, Indiana.
