Fort Ives was authorized in 1864 and built between 1865 and 1870 on the northwest end of McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor. Fort Ives (1865-1942) - A British colonial coastal fort established in 1865 on the northwest end of McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor in present day Halifax County, Nova Scotia, Canada. Named for the location. Abandoned circa 1942. Also known as Ives Point Battery.
HistoryPart of the Harbor Defense of Halifax.   Fort Ives was authorized in 1864 and built between 1865 and 1870 on the northwest end of McNab's Island in Halifax Harbor. The fort was equidistant from Fort Clarence and Fort Ogilvie (1) (2200 yards) and was armed six 9" rifled muzzle loaded (RML) guns and three 10" RML guns mounted in deep embrasures with iron shields. Three casemates were used as barracks and a fourth was used to assemble munitions. Additional improvements were made between 1888 and 1890 that filled in the deep embrasures and mounted the guns to fire over the parapet. In 1890 a new battery was built with two new 6" breech loaded (BL) quick firing (QF) guns. The 9" RML guns were removed 1899-1902 and replaced with more modern BL guns. During World War I the fort was upgraded and there were several search lights placed below the QF battery to illuminate mine fields and the submarine nets anchored at Ives Point. Fort Ives was operational at the beginning of World War II but it was decommissioned in the early years of the war as the harbor defense moved further out. The fort's guns were moved to other locations.
