Fort Assumption (1739‑1740) - A French colonial fort built in 1739 by Bienville on the present site of Memphis, Tennessee: it was based on its brief occupation that France claimed a vast territory around it for many years. Abandoned and destroyed by the French in 1740.

History of Fort Assumption

Completed on 15 Aug 1739 (Assumption Day) by Jean Baptiste le Moyne, sieur de Bienville, then governor of French Louisiana during a conflict with the Chickasaw Indians. Bienville brought some 4,000 French and Choctaw allies and built this fort on the banks of the Mississippi River at present day Memphis, Tennessee. A peace was made and the French and their allies departed, destroying the fort in 1740.
