Vrooman's Battery (1812-1812) - A British gun battery established in 1812 during the War of 1812 in present day Niagara RM, Ontario, Canada. Named for the land owner Soloman Vrooman. Abandoned in 1812. HistoryVrooman’s Battery was a crescent-shaped earthwork with a single 24-pounder cannon located on Soloman Vrooman’s land along the Niagara River. The battery saw action in the battle of Queenston Heights on 13 October 1812 against American invasion forces. American forces crossed the Niagara River from Lewiston New York into Queenston Ontario on 13 Oct 1812 and took the heights above the town. The British counter attacked but failed to drive the Americans off the Heights and their commander, Major General Sir Isaac Brock was killed. British reinforcements again attacked and drove the Americans back. During the battle Vrooman’s Battery kept up harrassing fire on the Americans crossing the river and provided support for attacking British forces. The battery was manned by elements of the 5th Lincoln Regiment under Captain Samuel Hatt and Lieutenant John Ball.
