Fort Fanning (2) (1838-1843) - A U.S. Army post originally established as Fort Number 9 E in 1838 during the Second Seminole War in present day Fanning Springs, Gilchrist County, Florida. Renamed Fort Fanning for Lieutenant Colonel Alexander C.W. Fanning, 4th U.S. Artillery. Abandoned in 1843. Also known as Fort Palmetto. HistoryA U.S. Army post originally established in 1838 during the Second Seminole War. The post was abandoned 22 Feb 1843. Current StatusPart of Fort Fanning Historic City Park, Fanning Springs, Gilchrist County, Florida. A reconstructed gate and stockade section are on the site.
