HistoryEstablished as a American Fur Company (AFC) trading post in 1835 under the direction of Samuel Tullock for trade with the Crow Indians. The post was located on the south side of the Yellowstone River at the mouth of the Rosebud River. In May 1842 Charles Larpenteur was sent to Fort Van Buren to bring the fur returns for the season back to Fort Union he was also instructed to burn down Fort Van Buren and to build a new Fort at Adams Prairie. To accomplish these tasks Larpenteur headed a party of ten men. He named the new fort, Fort Alexander, after Mr. Alexander Culbertson who was then in charge of Fort Union and who had sent Larpenteur on his mission. Current StatusNo Remains.
