HistoryA volunteer militia camp that was established in 1867 as Montana became a Territory. Rapid growth in Virginia City as a result of a gold discovery there on 26 May 1863. Thousands of gold-seekers rushed to the area, and by 1864 the Virginia City area had some 30,000 residents. Virginia City became the territorial capital (1865-1875) and the Madison County seat. Camp Cummings was a volunteer militia camp built to raise and train an 80-man company in Virginia City. The camp was abandoned later in 1867. Current StatusUnknown
