Fort Lauderdale (1838, 1839-1842, 1856-1857) - A U.S. Army post established in 1838 by Major William Lauderdale, Tennessee Volunteers, in the present day City of Fort Lauderdale, Broward County, Florida. Named by Major General Thomas Jessup in S.O. 74, 16 Mar 1838, for Major William Lauderdale. The fort was relocated in 1839 and again in 1856, finally abandoned in 1858.
