Fort Barnwell (1) (1712-1712) - A South Carolina militia post established by Colonel John Barnwell in 1712 near the present day town of Fort Barnwell in Craven County, North Carolina. Named for Colonel John Barnwell of South Carolina. Abandoned later in 1712.
Fort Barnwell (1) History
Constructed by militia Colonel John Barnwell in April 1712 during his operations against the Tuscarora Indians in North Carolina. The Tuscarora were defeated with more than 300 killed and 100 made prisoner at Fort Narhantes on the banks of the Neuse River in present day Craven County, North Carolina.
Current Status
Remains 2 miles Northeast of the town of Fort Barnwell in Craven County, North Carolina.
