Fort Decker (1779-1779) - A settler Revolutionary War Fort established in 1779 in Port Jervis, Orange County, New York. Named Fort Decker after Major Martinus Decker. Burned down in July 1779. Also known as Fort Martinus Decker.
Fort Decker History
A fortified settler house further fortified by Major Martinus Decker with a stockade in 1779. The house and the stockade were burned down during a raid by British Indian chief Joseph Brant and his men on 20 Jul 1779. The pursuit by 150 Patriot militia men led to the battle of Minisink on 22 Jul 1779 which resulted in 45 patriots killed.
The Decker house was rebuilt in 1793 and remains to this day as a museum, also on the National Register of Historic Places.
Current Status
Rebuilt house is now a Museum in Port Jervis, Orange County, New York.
