Highlands Military Reservation (1917-1920, 1940-1974) - First established in 1917 in Navesink, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Abandoned as a Military Reservation in 1974. Endicott Period (1890-1910)Part of the Harbor Defense of Southern New York. Established to provide protective shelter to U.S. shipping and to guard an important shipping channel into New York Harbor. World War I (1917-1918)
World War II (1941-1945)
Cold War (1947–1991)A USAF Radar Station, Highlands Air Force Station, was in operation on the site between 1948 and 1966. That site was then turned over to the U.S. Army on 1 Jul 1966 and became Highlands Army Air Defense Site. Finally closed in 1974. Current StatusPart of the Hartshorne Woods County Park, Navesink, Monmouth County, New Jersey. Two World War II batteries are visible. No remains of the radar site and most of the military reservation has been returned to park land.
