Seattle ARTCC (1962-Active) - One of 22 FAA Air Route Traffic Control Centers in the United States. Established in 1962 in Auburn, King County, Washington. Assigned an FAA ID of ZSE. Active FAA Air Traffic Control Center. HistorySeattle Air Route Traffic Control Center (ZSE) is one of 25 FAA Area Control Centers, 22 in the United States. It is located in Auburn, King County, Washington and was opened at this location in 1962. The Seattle Center (ZSE) covers part of the western service area. The original Seattle ARTCC was located at the Boeing Field Administration Building in 1940 and control instructions were relayed to pilots via company phone lines. In 1950, Seattle ARTCC moved to the Seattle Tacoma Airport (SeaTac) Administration Building, where the first radio was commissioned in the facility allowing direct controller to pilot. In 1962 the ARTCC moved from SeaTac to its current location in Auburn, Washington.
The gathering of radar and other sensor data is now largely automated and continuous but the actions necessary to control the airspace are conversational and require some 14,000 FAA air traffic controllers talking directly to pilots in the air and on the ground at terminals. This number does not include military air traffic controllers. The Seattle ARTCC airspace encompasses approximately 300,000 square miles including all of Washington, most of Oregon and portions of Montana, Idaho, Nevada, and California. The center boundaries extend from the Canadian border to Northern California and from western Montana to 150 miles off the Pacific Coast. There are nine approach controls in Seattle Center’s airspace. ZSE works with Vancouver and Edmonton Control Centers to the north, Salt Lake City center to the east, and Oakland Center to the south and west. Current StatusActive FAA ARTCC facility in Auburn, King County, Washington.
