Fort Sarpy (2)

Fort Sarpy (2) (1859-1860) - Established as a replacement for Fort Sarpy (1) by the American Fur Company in 1859. History This post was built to replace Fort Sarpy (1) which had been abandoned and burned down in 1855. Fort Sarpy (2) was a 100' square stockaded trading post with 15-foot-high, cottonwood-log walls, loopholed at the top. This post was an effort to reestablish the fur fur trade with the Crow Indians but the site proved to be too dangerous and was abandoned after a single year of operation. The site was said to be located on the south bank of the Yellowstone River, near the mouth of the Big Horn River, in present-day Treasure County.
