Endicott Period
The land for the Middle Point Military Reservation was acquired by condemnation decree rendered 1 Apr 1899 that included both Middle Point and Orchard Point for a total of 715.75 acres. Construction began in 1900 on a mine storage building, a mine casemate, a mine cable tank and Battery Mitchell. Battery Mitchell was to provide protection for the mine fields but was never armed because of the excellent coverage from Fort Ward (2).
