Endicott Period (1890-1910)
Part of the Harbor Defense of Puget Sound. Middle Point Military Reservation guarded the Rich Passage and the entrance to Bremerton Navy Yard.
The land for the Middle Point Military Reservation was acquired by condemnation decree rendered 1 Apr 1899 that included both Middle Point and Orchard Point for a total of 715.75 acres. Construction began in 1900 on a mine storage building, a mine casemate, a mine cable tank and Battery Mitchell. The three mine facilities were all turned over for service on 4 Dec 1905 at a total cost of $20,800. Battery Mitchell was to provide protection for the mine fields but was never armed because of the excellent coverage from Fort Ward (2).
