Fort Wingate (1) (1862-1868) - A U.S. Army post established in 1862 during the U.S. Civil War by Lt. Colonel J. Francisco Chavez, 1st New Mexico Infantry, near present day San Rafael in Cibola County, New Mexico. Named for Captain Benjamin Wingate, 5th U.S. Infantry, who was mortally wounded at the Battle of Valverde during the Mexcan War. Abandoned in 1868. Also known as Fort El Gallo.
