Camp Buckner (1) (1942-Present) - A World War II training camp first established as Camp Popolopen in 1942 on Popolopen Lake, Orange County, New York. Renamed Camp Buckner on 14 Nov 1945 after General Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr., former commandant of cadets at the United States Military Academy, who was killed in action on 18 Jan 1945 during the battle for Okinawa in World War II. This camp serves as a summer training camp for USMA cadets. Active military camp.

History of Camp Buckner

The summer training camp for the United States Military Academy was originally located at the site of Fort Clinton. This training camp was moved to Lake Popolopen southwest of the main campus and named Camp Popolopen on 21 Apr 1942. This is an 80 acre facility bordering the lake.

This camp serves as a summer training camp for USMA cadets. Active military camp providing field training for cadets with military vehicles, arms and tactics.
