Fort West (1863-1864) - A U.S. Civil War Fort first established in 1863 by California Volunteers, Grant County, New Mexico. Named Fort West after Brigadier General Joseph R. West. Abandoned in 1864. History of Fort WestEstablished 24 Feb 1863 by Captain William McCleave, 1st California Volunteer Cavalry. The post was established to protect local miners from hostile Apaches during the Apache Wars. The post was abandoned 8 Jan 1864. Current StatusUnknown.
