Fort Bascom (1863-1870) - A U.S. Army post established in 1863 during the U.S. Civil War by Captain Peter W.L. Plympton (Cullum 1365), 7th U.S. Infantry, on the west bank of the Canadian River in San Miguel County, New Mexico. Named for Captain George N. Bascom (Cullum 1823), 16th U.S. Infantry, who was killed 21 Feb 1862 at the Battle of Valverde, New Mexico. Abandoned in 1870.

Fort Bascom History

Established 15 Aug 1863 by Captain Peter W.L. Plympton, 7th U.S. Infantry and elements of Company F, 7th U.S. Infantry and Company I, 1st New Mexico Volunteers. Established to protect New Mexico travel routes and promote settlement of the Canadian River Valley. The post was not completed but stone officers quarters and adobe barracks were constructed.

The post was abandoned in December 1870 and the garrison transferred to Fort Union.

Current Status

Private property in San Miguel County, New Mexico. Only foundation remains.
