First Seminole War (1817-1818) 1817-1819 First Seminole War – Andrew Jackson's army destroys crops, steals livestock, and destroys Negro forts in the Apalachicola and Suwannee River regions. 22 Feb 1819 The United States Senate ratifies a treaty with Spain to take possession of Florida. 1821 Spanish government ratifies treaty, finally turning over Florida to the United States. 18 Feb 1823 Treaty of Moultrie Creek signed. 1824 Fort Brooke established as one of the United States government forts charged with watching over "problems" between Seminoles and white settlers.
