Fort Pulaski
Fort Pulaski (1829-1903) - Construction began in 1829 under the supervision of Maj. Gen. Babcock, and later 2nd Lt. Robert E. Lee. Named after Kazimierz Pulaski in 1833. Completed in 1847 after 18 years and almost $1,000,000.

Current Status
Fort Pulaski became a National Monument 15 Oct 1924 and was transferred from the War Department to the National Park Service 10 Aug 1933 and became a National Monument. During World War II the island was used as a U.S. Navy base. After World War II the fort reverted to National Park Service control and was placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
